First report of loss of libido: case reportA 35-year-old man experienced a complete loss of libido 10

days after he began citalopram 20 mg/day for depression; hissexual function was unimpaired before citalopram was started.

After a further week of citalopram therapy, the mandiscontinued the agent and his libido returned to his baselinelevel within 1 week. He refused any further citalopram or otherantidepressant therapy.

Author comment: ‘Citalopram is the most selective of theserotonin reuptake inhibitors. The decreased libido observed inthis patient might be explained by the fact that sexualmotivation and performance are inversely related to synapticserotonin concentration.’Michael A, et al.
