Reactions 1376 - 5 Nov 2011 Ergocalciferol Vitamin D toxicity: case report A 35-year-old woman, who had undergone surgery for thyroid cancer at age 19 years, developed postoperative hypoparathyroidism secondary to persistent hypocalcaemia, and was treated with ergocalciferol [vitamin D2; Drisdol; route not stated] in alternating doses of 50 000 and 100 000IU daily, and calcium carbonate. She presented with a history of polyuria, polydypsia, limb numbness, muscle pain, weight loss and constipation over the last year [duration of treatment to reaction onset not clearly stated]. Laboratory investigations revealed calcium and 25(OH)vitamin D levels of 8.9 mg/dL and 284 ng/mL, respectively. Ergocalciferol was discontinued and, after a month, her symptoms resolved and her 25(OH)vitamin D level had decreased to 87 ng/mL. Kim C, et al.
