    Meditation(an analysis)

    Karayam-atthakusalenayan-ta santa pada abhisamecca

    What should be done by one skilful in good,

    who has comprehended the state of peace:

    Karayam what should be doneattha (= atthe) in goodkusalena by one skilfulyan-ta (the one) whosanta of peacepada the stateabhisamecca has comprehended

    sakko uj ca sj casuvaco c' assa mudu anatimn

    he ought to be able, straight, and upright,

    easy to speak to, meek, without conceit,

    sakko ableuj straightca andsj upright

    ca andsuvaco easy to speak toc' (= ca) andassa he ought to bemudu meekanatimnwithout conceit

    santussako ca subharo caappa-kicco ca sallahuka-vutti

    satisfied (with little), easy to support,

    with few duties, and light in living,

    santussako satisfiedca andsubharo easy to supportca andappa- fewkicco dutiesca andsallahuka- (= sa+lahuka) (with) lightvutti living

    sant' indriyo ca nipako caappagabbho kulesu ananugiddho

    with faculties at peace, prudent,

    not forward, and greedless among the families,

    sant' (= santa) peaceindriyo facultiesca andnipako prudentca andappagabbho (= a+pagabbho) not forwardkulesu among the familiesananugiddho (= an+anugiddho) greedless

    na ca khudda samcare kiciyena vi pare upavadeyyu

    he should not do the slightest thingwhereby others who are wise might find fault (with him).

    na notca (connective particle)khudda slightestsamcare he should dokici thingyena wherebyvi wise

    "Sukhino v khemino hontusabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt

    "(May all beings) be happy and secure,

    may all beings in their hearts be happy!

    Sukhino happyv (= va) emphatickhemino securehontu besabbe allsatt beingsbhavantu may (they) besukhitatt (= sukhita+att) happy in heart

    Ye keci pa-bht' atthitas v thvar v anavases

    Whatsoever breathing beings there are -

    trembling, firm, or any other (beings),

    Ye keci Whatsoeverpa- breathingbht' (= bht) beingsatthi there aretas tremblingv orthvar firmv oranavases any other (lit: what remains)

    dgh v ye mahant vmajjhim rassakuka-thl

    whether they be long or great,of middle size, short, tiny, or of compact (body),

    dgh longv orye they (who)mahant greatv ormajjhim middle (size)rassak(a)- short

    dih v ye ca addihye ca dre vasanti avidre

    those who are seen, and those who are unseen,

    those who live far away, those who are near,

    dih seenv (or)ye those whoca andaddih (= a+dih) unseenye those whoca anddre far (away)vasanti live

    avidre near

    bht v sambhaves vsabbe satt bhavantu sukhitatt

    those who are born, and those who still seek birth -

    may all beings in their hearts be happy!"

    Na paro para nikubbethantimaetha katthaci na kaci

    No one should cheat another,

    nor should he despise anyone wherever they be,

    Na noparo one (lit: other)para anothernikubbetha should cheatntimaetha (= na+atimaetha) nor should he despisekatthaci wherever

    na kaci anyone

    he should not long for suffering for another

    because of anger or resentment.

    Mt yath niya putta

    yus eka-puttam anurakkhe

    in the same way as a mother would protect

    her son, her only son, with her life,

    Mt a motheryath in the same way asniya her (lit: one's own)putta sonyus lifeeka- only (lit: one)puttam sonanurakkhe would protect

    evam-pi sabba-bhtesumnasa bhvaye aparima

    so toward all beings

    he should develop the measureless thought (of friendliness).

    Metta-ca sabba-lokasmimnasa bhvaye aparima

    Towards the whole wide world he should develop

    the measureless thought of friendliness,

    uddha adho ca tiriya-caasambdha avera asapatta

    above, below, and across (the middle),

    without barriers, hate, or enemy.

    Standing, walking, sitting,

    lying, for as long as he is without torpor,

    eta sati adiheyyabrahmam-eta vihra idha-m-hu

    he should be resolved on this mindfulness,

    for this, they say here, is the (true) spiritual life.

    eta thissati mindfulnessadiheyya should be resolved onbrahmam spiritualeta thisvihra lifeidha herem (euphonic particle)hu they say

    dihi-ca anupagammaslav dassanena sampanno

    without going near to (wrong) views,

    virtuous, and endowed with (true) insight,

    dihi viewsca (and)anupagamma (= an + upagamma) without going near

    slav virtuousdassanena insightsampanno endowed

    kmesu vineyya gedhana hi jtu gabbha seyya puna-r-et ti

    having removed (all) greed for sense pleasures,

    he will never come to lie in a womb again.
