★Riluzole
First report of kidney disorders: case reportKidney disorders occurred in a 44-year-old man during
treatment with riluzole for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The man started treatment with riluzole 100 mg/day. Three
months later, tests showed polydypsia, polyuria, normoglycaemic glycosuria, hypercalciuria (513.4 mg/24h)and hyperuricuria (1030.6 mg/24h). Renal impairment due toriluzole was suspected and the agent was discontinued. Onemonth later, the man’s renal function had recovered.
Author comment: In this patient, other causes of renaldamage, apart from riluzole therapy, were excluded. ‘Wepropose that urine analysis should be added to routinemonitoring of liver enzymes and blood cell count in ALS[amyotrophic lateral sclerosis] patients treated with riluzole.’Poloni TE, et al. Renal tubular impairment during riluzole therapy. Neurology 52:670, Feb 1999 - Italy 800745654
» Editorial comment: A search of AdisBase and Medline didnot reveal any previous case reports of kidney disordersassociated with riluzole.
