Reactions 743 - 20 Mar 1999 Riluzole First report of kidney disorders: case report Kidney disorders occurred in a 44-year-old man during treatment with riluzole for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The man started treatment with riluzole 100 mg/day. Three months later, tests showed polydypsia, polyuria, normoglycaemic glycosuria, hypercalciuria (513.4 mg/24h) and hyperuricuria (1030.6 mg/24h). Renal impairment due to riluzole was suspected and the agent was discontinued. One month later, the man’s renal function had recovered. Author comment: In this patient, other causes of renal damage, apart from riluzole therapy, were excluded. ‘We propose that urine analysis should be added to routine monitoring of liver enzymes and blood cell count in ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis] patients treated with riluzole.’ Poloni TE, et al.
