When Periyavaa was giving darshan, four or five Vidwans who had come for darshan, were sitting onthe floor.
In the course of his conversation (with the devotees), Periyavaa asked them, “When Bhaktas donamaskaram to me, I bless them with the name ‘Narayana, Narayana’. What do you people who aresamsAris say for blessing?”
“We say, ‘[b]dIrgha AyushmAn bhavaH[b]‘; only that is the custom.”
“What does it mean?”
“Remain in saukyam for a long time’ is its meaning.”
Periyavaa asked all the Vidwans present there, one by one. Everyone said the same meaning.
Periyavaa remained in silence for sometime. Then he said, “The meaning you all said is a wrong one.”
The Pandits were taken aback. Everyone of them was a bade bade Vidwan, and had earned theSiromani title.
For the Samskrta Vaakyam ‘Dirgha AyushmAn bhavah’ even those with a little knowledge ofSamskrtam can tell the meaning. Such simple words! Yet Periyavaa says the meaning is wrong?

“Shall I tell it myself…..?” The Pandits sharpened their ears.
“Of the twenty-seven Yogas, one is named AyushmAn. Of the eleven KaraNas, one is the called theBhava. Among the week days, the Saumya Vaasaram falls on a Wednesday. When all these three–on aWednesday, the AyushmAn Yoga and the Bhava KaraNa–occur together, that day is said to be
shlAgya. Therefore, if these three occur together, whatever good phalas would be got, I bless that youmay get all those fruits…”
All the Vidwans got up in together and did namaskaram to PeriyavaaL.

Assuming Mahaperiava did indeed give the interpretation as stated in the article, the word ‘dIrgha’seems to become meaningless and there would be no verb. While we mortals make such
benedictions (dIrgha AyushmAn bhava etc.), truly great people like Mahaperiava do simply utter

‘nArAyaNa’ etc in keeping with the dictum ‘sarva dEva namaskAraH kESavaM pratigacchati’.
Though guru stands on a totally different footing, it is their humility that they invoke ‘nArAyaNa’etc while blessing devotees.
Therefore, I have serious doubt whether this interpretation is really true or whether it is an
interpolation by some clever Sanskirt scholar. If I am wrong, I sincerely apologise for mytransgression. However, if what I say is correct, then I can only say that people of indulging

Periyava’s interpretation is really true. All the karanas like bhava have phalams in life. Thosephalams be of good ones eliminating bad or evil ones. What is the use of living long with evil in life
and invite suffering? Wednesday, Pon us dayskidaithalum Bhudan Kidaikkaadu, is an auspiceosday. Periava was brilliant. Ther is no other go but to worship himsince all the Gnanis become God

I still feel that this interpretation has not been given by Maha Periava. Some astrologer isweaving stories. We need to trace the origin of this story. Otherwise. this has to be taken only
