An Ageless festival, witnessing largest congregation ever while celebrating Multiple Identities

of India…

Kumbha Mela is the largest spiritual and religious festival in the world. Pilgrims attend the

festival with utmost devotion; tremendous faith and in overwhelming numbers. It is by far the

largest gathering for a month long of pilgrims in the world with 100 million people embarking on

the once in a lifetime spiritual journey, chanting the gods above, on the magical banks of river

Kshipra. This Simhastha Kumbha Mela is held in central India – on the holy lands of Ujjain, city

of Lord Mahakaleshwar (Lord Shiva), in the midst of mystical Sadhus (Monks), the pilgrims will

stream from all over the world to pray and emerge purified and renewed from Kumbha. This

pious journey will take them into the hearts of Hinduism, its philosophy, belief and traditions.

The Kumbha Mela is not only a religious gathering but it is an ideal situation of crowd

management. The number of attendees has been significantly increasing with every gathering.

Pilgrims come in millions; set up an ephemeral town for days. The gathering has attracted and

impressed people from all over the world. Not only Hindus but people from all castes, religion,

gender, age and countries come to witness this massive fest of faith. It truly is a wonderful

spectacle. People arrive like waves in the sea. Many travel long distances to this festival in a

hope of washing away their sins and attaining Moksha by dipping themselves in the holy

waters. Kumbha is a site full of mystics and magic. The festival provides for once in a lifetime

experience to live through the largest congregation of humanity and is a great photogenic

spectacle for all its visitors. The positive vibes in the air, the holy water and the soothing

environment, have the capability of taking an individual soul to a whole new level of

consciousness.

The Legend Of Kumbha Mela

The Simhastha Kumbha is an unrivalled celebration in India. The most popular legend regarding

the origin of Kumbha Melas is the Samudra Manthan or ‘churning of the ocean’. Gods and

demons competed erectly in the churning in search of the divine nectar of immortality. During

this epic battle to capture the Urn (Kumbha) containing the nectar, drops of the precious liquid

fell on four places – Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Nashik and Ujjain. Hence, river Kshipra

became the enhancer of life and to celebrate this event since then, the grand festival came in

vogue. Simhastha Kumbha Mela is held once every 12 years at Ujjain and attracts millions of

devotees.
