INTERNSHIPS AND PROJECTS

Certification and Performance Engineer Intern, Cummins Marine, May-August 2015 i) Transparency testing of Electronic control modules on an 8.3 liter marine diesel engine by getting torque

curves, emissions data (E5 cycle) and smoke opacity data(transient testing). ii) Comparison of performance (Torque, BHP, BMEP and BSFC) of 15 liter Cummins engines with those of

competing manufacturers’ marine engines in order to identify a competitive torque curve for the development of a 15 liter marine engine.

iii) Comparison of performance (Torque, BHP, BMEP and BSFC) of 1000hp marine engines in the market in order to identify a competitive torque curve and suitable performance benchmarks for the development of a 1000hp recreational marine diesel engine.

iv) Updating of performance and emissions data in the engine performance specifications document of a 6.7 liter Marine engine for three different fuel ratings.

v) Comparison of Engine Performance data in company database and Engine Performance Spec sheets in order

to check for consistency.

vi) Performing checks on warranty claim documents to eliminate inconsistencies in data.

Measurement of thermal conductivity of dielectric films using Time Domain Thermoreflectance (TDTR) method, August- December 2014

i) Deposition of a thin layer of Aluminum on low-k dielectric films grown on silicon substrates. ii) Curve-fitting of experimental and theoretically predicted data to measure thermal conductivity of

dielectric films.

Performance and emission analysis of a 4 stroke Compression Ignition engine using biodiesel-water emulsion fuel blends with nanoparticle additives, January 2014 – April 2014

i) Preparation of biodiesel through trans-esterification of Calophyllum inophyllum feedstock oil. ii) Blending of water and biodiesel using suitable surfactant and blending with Al2O3 nanoparticles. iii) Study of emission and performance characteristics of a Compression Ignition engine using water-biodiesel

emulsion blended with different concentrations of Al2O3 nanoparticles.

Characterization of heat transfer characteristics of a spiral mini channel, August– December 2013 i) Study of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of a swirl mini-channel using Al2O3/H2O nanofluid

of concentrations 0.1%, 0.5% and 0.8% as a working fluid. ii) Comparison of the average Nusselt number, pressure drop and friction factor values for the swirl mini

channel with corresponding data for conventional straight mini channels (obtained from existing literature).

Characterization of sprays from Prefilming Airblast Atomizers , May-July 2013 i) Measurement of Spray droplet diameter and film thickness through high speed imaging. ii) Measurement of Droplet velocities using Phase Doppler Particle Analyser experiments.

iii) Observation of variation in film break-up through air blast atomization using FLUENT simulations by

varying Air-Weber number values.
